Dutch police, army form joint anti-terror squad
The police and the army in the Netherlands have established a new unit to deal with incidents involving terrorists or organized crime.
"For the first time police duties have been combined with defense activities," said Peter Van Zunderd, the head of the national police service on Monday.
"This is an important development within our organization to better tackle major organized crime gangs and terrorism," he told a meeting to mark the New Year.
The new squad has been named "Dienst Speciale Interventies", or Special Intervention Service. It will be ready to be deployed at short notice to deal with incidents that involve serious violence or the threat of serious violence.
The new unit will have its own sharpshooters and a range of operational experts.
"Combining these various units in one service will lead to faster and greater preparedness," Van Zunderd said.
