MOSCOW, Jan. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- The man charged with attempting to take the life of U.S. President George W. Bush during his visit to Georgia last year was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday by a court in Tbilisi.

The Tbilisi City Court found Vladimir Arutyunian guilty of attempting to kill Bush and his Georgian counterpart Mikhail Saakashvili during an outdoor rally in Tbilisi in May 2005 and sentenced him to life in prison, the punishment demanded by the prosecution.

Arutyunian had admitted he hurled a grenade at the podium where Bush and Saakashvili were standing in Tbilisi's Freedom Square on May 10, 2005. The grenade did not explode.

He was detained near his house in July 2005 in a police operation, during which he shot dead a police officer.
