Office space and furniture designer Steelcase has linked up with not-for-profit enterprise Green-Works, which provides schools, charities and community organisations with redundant office furniture.

Green-WorksˇŻ zero landfill policy sees it take old furniture from offices and re-distribute it to others. Damaged or worn items can be remodelled or repaired at its in-house joinery, with remaining items distributed to art and drama projects for more innovative uses.

Steelcase UK managing director Mark Spragg said: ˇ°Green-Works provide a fantastic service which allows organisations to deal with their surplus office furniture in a socially and environmentally responsible way. Regions find place at furniture’s bountiful table

Regions find place at furniture’s bountiful table
By: Pavla Kozáková, 18. 09. 2006, More by this author

The highly competitive office furniture market has seen little consolidation so far, but the myriad of small companies in the sector already see a positive effect from rapid office space development, especially in the regions outside Prague.

There are about 200 major office furniture suppliers on the Czech market, but small furniture suppliers, who offer made-to-order office furniture, constitute the largest portion. “According to our estimates, there are around 3,000 furniture producers in the Czech Republic,” said Tomáš Lukeš, secretary general of the Association of the Czech Furniture Manufacturers (AČN), noting that data on the exact number of active producers is unavailable. Various sources put the number between 2,500 and 4,000. Major players in the Czech furniture market include Ahrend, Interior PFD, Techo, Steelcase, Vitra Koncept and Samas Česká republika.

The market is healthy with net sales and exports both on an upward trend. The production of wooden office furniture grew to Kč 1.38 billion (E 48 million) last year from Kč 1.26 billion in 2004. Metal office furniture production recorded a similar increase to Kč 1.27 billion from Kč 1.15 billion on the year. The Czech Republic exports more office furniture than it imports, and last year imports recorded a slight decrease. On the year, the export of wooden and metal office furniture rose last year to Kč 721 million and Kč 594 million, from Kč 610 million and Kč 500 million, respectively. Imports dropped to Kč 312 million in 2005 from Kč 314 million for wooden office furniture, and to Kč 243 million from Kč 248 million for metal office furniture in 2004.

While there are no results available for this year’s market, there’s no indication that the there will be a drop in production, according to AČN’s Lukeš. Ahrend, for example, has witnessed increased demand. “We’ve already exceeded last year’s results,” said Helena Kudláčková, customer support team leader at Ahrend, adding that the company expects a “big” increase in revenues this year, declining to give specific figures. Last fall Ahrend acquired a 75 percent stake in its rival, Techo, and became the leader in sales on the CEE market. Both brands continue to operate on the market, and the two companies seek to complement each other, with Ahrend offering luxury furniture and Techo catering to mass demand.

Trends and changes

The office furniture market is characterized by a relatively slow development of new trends, with most producers and suppliers updating their product line only once every two years, according to Lukeš.

Current trends that Kudláčková pointed out include the demand for made-to-order furniture, and open plan offices where employees share one large office space. “Open space office is still in demand, but now the number of employees in one such office is no longer 150, but rather in the dozens,” she said.

In high demand are chairs that respect body ergonomics, small chests of drawers, and screens to divide the open office, Kudláčková said.

The growing use of flat monitors, notebook computers and electronic back-up devices has decreased the required space needed for the average employee. “The average work space is getting smaller, and there’s no need for shelves for folders, for example. The required storage facility for offices has dropped dramatically,” said Lukeš.

The industry also expects a significant surge in revenues from the demand created by new tenants in regional office centers. “This is a relatively new thing; some centers have already opened this year, and more are expected to open next year,” Lukeš said, adding that Brno, South Moravia, and Ostrava, North Moravia, will generate the most opportunities outside of Prague.

Ahrend’s Kudláčková said that regional growth of companies is helping furniture markets to expand as well. If the company serves satisfied customers in Prague, those customers often use the same furniture supplier for the new regional offices. She gave Škoda Auto and ING Bank as examples of companies Ahrend now serves in the regions.

Office supplies

The office supply market saw a major change when Czech leading supplier Papirius became part of the American global corporation Office Depot as of Sept. 1, 2006. Jan Černý and Petr Sýkora, the founders of Papirius, sold 100 percent of the company to Office Depot, but will remain at the helm of the Czech branch. “Office Depot is an ideal partner for us from the strategic viewpoint,” said Sýkora, adding that a strong international company will allow Papirius to improve its customer service. Office Depot, with revenues of $15 billion (Kč 336.4 billion / E 11.83 billion), is currently active in 37 countries worldwide and employs around 50,000 people.

Papirius employs over 540 workers, and its Czech revenues increased to Kč 1.17 billion last year from Kč 1.12 billion the previous year. The revenues for the whole Papirius group, including the Slovak, Hungarian and Latvian markets, grew to Kč 1.31 in 2005 from Kč 1.20 billion on the year.

The second-largest supplier on the Czech market, Activa, boosted its revenues to Kč 1.09 billion last year from Kč 862 million in 2004. The company employs over 360 people and caters to almost 15,300 companies and organizations. Activa has an additional branch in Slovakia.

Online orders

The office supply market has also witnessed a steady growth in online shopping, with over one-third of all office supply orders coming through online ordering systems. Last June, to capitalize on the growing demand for online shopping and to make online shopping more user-friendly, Papirius revamped its Internet shop at polo.papirius.cz.

Activa launched its Internet shop in February 2001; currently around 10,000 customers use the online shopping, making it responsible for about 35 percent of the company’s revenues. The share of online shopping for office supplies is expected to further expand because it’s fast, convenient, and allows companies to save money since their stock of supplies can be much lower when using online ordering with quick terms of delivery.

CIA authenticates bin Laden's new tape

CIA authenticates bin Laden's new tape

Analysts at the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) believed that the voice on a tape, aired earlier Thursday by Arab television station Al Jazeera, was that of Osama bin Laden, an agency official said.

The official, speaking anonymously, said that following technical analysis, the CIA determined that the voice on the tape was that of bin Laden, chief of the al Qaeda terrorist organization.

Bin Laden warned in the tape that attacks were under preparations against the United States and its allies, and offered a truce in response to U.S. public opinion favoring withdrawal American troops from Iraq. "We don't mind offering you a long-term truce on fair conditions that we adhere to," he said in the tape.

He said both sides could "enjoy security and stability under this truce so we can build Iraq and Afghanistan, which have been destroyed in this war."

Speaking on the Fox News channel, Vice President Dick Cheney said he believed the truce offer was a ploy and that it was too early to draw any conclusions.

"I'm not sure what he's offering by way of a truce. I don't think anybody would believe him ... It sounds to me like it's some kind of a ploy, but again not having seen the entire text or validated the tape and the timing of it, I'm reluctant to draw any conclusions," he said.

At a luncheon speech in New York on Thursday, Cheney warned that the United States still faced significant threats from terrorists attempting to establish a radical Islamic empire.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said President George W. Bush had been informed about the tape, and that the United States would not negotiate with terrorists.

"Clearly the al Qaeda leaders and other terrorists are on the run, they're under a lot of pressure. We do not negotiate with terrorists, we put them out of business," he said.

The Department of Homeland Security had no plan to raise the country's security alert level in response to the tape, department officials said.

Vladimir Arutyunian, who attempted to kill Bush and his Georgian counterpart Mikhail Saakashvili during an outdoor rally in Tbilisi in May 2005, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Tbilisi City Court on Jan. 11, 2006.

MOSCOW, Jan. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- The man charged with attempting to take the life of U.S. President George W. Bush during his visit to Georgia last year was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday by a court in Tbilisi.

The Tbilisi City Court found Vladimir Arutyunian guilty of attempting to kill Bush and his Georgian counterpart Mikhail Saakashvili during an outdoor rally in Tbilisi in May 2005 and sentenced him to life in prison, the punishment demanded by the prosecution.

Arutyunian had admitted he hurled a grenade at the podium where Bush and Saakashvili were standing in Tbilisi's Freedom Square on May 10, 2005. The grenade did not explode.

He was detained near his house in July 2005 in a police operation, during which he shot dead a police officer.

Beijing to invest more in suburban area

Beijing to invest more in suburban area

The Beijing municipal government will for the first time invest more in construction in the suburban area than in the urban area this year, a senior official said on Monday.

Ding Xiangyang, director of the city's development and reform commission, said 51 percent of the planned investment will go to the suburban area with the remaining 49 percent to the urban area this year.

Priority will be given to projects to improve the urban traffic system, suburban infrastructure facilities and public service facilities, to help save energy and protect the environment, and to boost the transformation of old residential quarters and areas for cultural heritage protection, said the official.

The investment management system will also be improved, he added.

The decision of the Beijing municipal government followed the call of the central government for nationwide endeavor to build a new countryside in the country, according to local observers.

Germany says not to take sides in Russia-Ukraine dispute

Germany says not to take sides in Russia-Ukraine dispute

The German government on Monday called for a compromise between Russia and Ukraine in the gas dispute, but insisted that German would not take sides in the row.

"There is no finger-pointing from our side," said Foreign Office spokesman Martin Jaeger.

Deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg said that German officials had phoned senior government members in both Moscow and Kiev and called on them to find a solution to the problem.

Steg reaffirmed that Berlin is not seeking to become a mediator for the dispute.

Thirty-five percent of Germany's total natural gas imports, or 84 percent, comes from Russia. More than 47 percent of the 37.7 million apartments and homes in Germany are heated with natural gas, according to Federal Association of the German Gas and Water Industry (BGW).

Russia's gas giant Gazprom cut off gas supplies to Ukraine on Sunday after Kiev rejected Moscow's demand for a sharp rise in gas prices in 2006.

German Economy Minister Michael Glos quelled fears that the cut-off would cause a shortage of gas supplies in Germany, saying "the 17 million German households for the moment have no cause for concern. They will not be affected by what has happened so far."

Another alternative for Germany, said a spokeswomen for the ministry, was to increase imports from Norway, aside from its 75-day gas stocks.

Steg said that a planned Russian-German natural gas pipeline running through the Baltic Sea was not put into question by the Russian cut-off to Ukraine.

The 4-billion-euro (4.7 billion U.S. dollars) gas pipeline, agreed in September between Germany and Russia, will raise gas import from Russia to Germany to 50 percent.

The project will be 51 percent owned by Gazprom and 49 percent by German utilities.

Dutch police, army form joint anti-terror squad

Dutch police, army form joint anti-terror squad

The police and the army in the Netherlands have established a new unit to deal with incidents involving terrorists or organized crime.

"For the first time police duties have been combined with defense activities," said Peter Van Zunderd, the head of the national police service on Monday.

"This is an important development within our organization to better tackle major organized crime gangs and terrorism," he told a meeting to mark the New Year.

The new squad has been named "Dienst Speciale Interventies", or Special Intervention Service. It will be ready to be deployed at short notice to deal with incidents that involve serious violence or the threat of serious violence.

The new unit will have its own sharpshooters and a range of operational experts.

"Combining these various units in one service will lead to faster and greater preparedness," Van Zunderd said.
